Sales Operations — the glossary

All 130 terms from the book’s appendix, defined exactly as the volume uses them. Published in full.

Acceptance (Qualification Acceptance)
The formal decision that a lead satisfies the applicable gate for opportunity activation and reporting. Acceptance requires recorded criteria; it is not implied by activity.
Accounting Revenue
The amount and timing Finance recognizes under the applicable accounting policy. An opportunity state does not determine accounting revenue by itself.
Amendment
A proposed change to terms already in force that may increase, decrease, or leave value unchanged.
Amount error
The difference between a forecast amount and the actual amount under the same declared basis.
Approval
An internal authorization that permits deviation from an approved pricing reference, term, or structure. Approval must be recorded, scoped to a specific exception, and attributable to an approving authority.
Approved, offered, and executed
Separate states for internally authorized terms, terms presented to the buyer, and an agreement meeting counsel-approved completion criteria.
Base contract
The active agreement whose obligations are being extended or changed.
Base rate
The observed outcome rate for a consistently defined historical cohort and horizon.
Bookings
An internal commercial measure that applies a documented eligibility, amount, date, cancellation, and adjustment policy to agreements. Closed-won may supply an input, but it is not automatically identical to bookings.
Buyer commitment
A buyer’s agreement to take a specific action that requires internal effort or coordination and changes what is possible next. Buyer commitment is observable and verifiable.
Buyer effort
An action taken by the buyer that requires internal coordination, approval, or resource allocation. Buyer effort is required by this book's default opportunity gate and by any stage definition that names it; an approved alternate gate must identify substitute evidence.
Buying Entity
The legal or organizational unit that will sign the agreement and be responsible for payment. Must be explicitly associated with the opportunity.
Buying path
The sequence of internal buyer steps required to reach a purchase decision, including participants, approvals, procurement, and legal review.
Calibration
Comparison of declared probability bands with observed outcome rates for comparable cases.
Cash Receipt
The recorded receipt of money. It follows the applicable billing and collection process and is not established by opportunity disposition, execution, handoff, or bookings.
Category exit
A timestamped, reasoned removal from a forecast because the record closed, moved outside the period, was lost, or ceased to satisfy the rule.
Classification
The assignment of a record to an outcome category using defined rules. Used in qualification, forecasting, and close logic.
Close logic
The entry criteria, timestamps, and reasons used to record how an agreement attempt resolved.
Closed-lost
A terminal opportunity state indicating that the current agreement attempt ended without satisfying closed-won and meets the owner's closure policy. Missing a planning window or inactivity alone is not a loss.
Closed-won
A terminal opportunity state indicating that the agreement satisfies the organization's counsel-approved binding criteria and required evidence is linked. Handoff readiness, bookings, accounting revenue, and cash remain separate states or measures.
Commercial variance
The basis-appropriate difference between an offer and its approved pricing reference, such as a discount, markup or margin variance, out-of-band bespoke quote, bid below a floor, or usage-rate exception.
Commit
A forecast category for opportunities that meet the published buyer-timing, scope, pricing, approval, and execution-readiness criteria for the stated outcome and period. A record exits commit when any required condition ceases to hold.
Completeness
The condition in which an opportunity record contains all structured fields implied by its current stage and deal type.
Concession drift
A sustained change in commercial-variance distribution not explained by an approved change in pricing, cost, offer, segment, usage, or deal mix.
Conditional category
A forecast class for eligible opportunities with specified unresolved buyer or internal conditions.
Contract drift
Divergence between the approved internal specification and offered or executed terms.
Control limit
A threshold that prompts review without proving the cause of the observed result.
Controlled category
A field whose values are limited to a fixed, published set.
Controlled field
A field whose change materially affects forecasting, economics, or downstream execution and therefore must be traceable.
Conversion rate
The proportion of records that move from one classification boundary to another (e.g., stage-to-stage, opportunity-to-close).
Countermeasure
A paired check that makes the supported path easier to verify and a record shortcut visible.
Creation schema
The minimum set of fields required when an opportunity activates.
Customer Value Unit
The customer-outcome unit defined in Revenue Design. It can inform offer design but does not, by itself, determine price, opportunity amount, accounting treatment, or forecast unit.
Dashboard
A maintained view of one or more metrics for a defined decision.
Data enforcement
Preventive or detective controls that test decision-bearing record states and make exceptions visible. Controls can be automated, reviewer-performed, or hybrid, but they retain the rule, evidence, actor, result, and disposition.
