Financial Operations

Reconciling Contracts, Revenue, Billing, and Cash

Financial Operations explains how to keep commercial, accounting, billing, collection, cost, and forecast records separate—and reconcile them without inventing one false revenue number.

Using the U.S. and international revenue-recognition standards commonly known as ASC 606 and IFRS 15, the book distinguishes contracts, management bookings, performance obligations, recognized revenue, invoices, receivables, contract liabilities, cash application, costs, and forecasts. It then covers billing, disputes, credits, collections, margin analysis, forecast bridges, close, leakage investigation, and reproducible review.

The HarborWorks and Northpoint case follows one arrangement through linked contract, accounting, billing, cash, cost, forecast, and close records. Completed tables show a contract-liability roll-forward, receivables and dispute record, cash application, margin sensitivity, forecast reconciliation, close calendar, and revenue-to-cash implementation sequence.

This is not a guide to cloud-cost FinOps, and it is not accounting, tax, legal, or audit advice. It is a technical operating guide for owners and finance operators. A qualified revenue accountant or controller and appropriate counsel should review the policies and examples before implementation.

Questions about this volume

Is this accounting advice?
No. It is an operating guide to the records, evidence, interfaces, and reconciliations around accounting decisions. A qualified revenue accountant or controller and appropriate counsel must review entity-specific policy and examples.
Why keep six records for one arrangement?
A contract, management booking, performance-obligation schedule, accounting entry, invoice or receivable, and cash application answer different questions and can coexist at different amounts and times. Stable identifiers and reconciliation connect them without making them identical.
Is this cloud-cost FinOps?
No. This volume uses FinOps as a short name for Financial Operations across contracts, accounting, billing, collection, cost, and forecasts. It explicitly distinguishes that scope from cloud-cost management.
