Revenue Operations

Revenue operations (RevOps)

Also called: RevOps

Revenue operations is the governing function that enforces coherence across marketing, sales, customer success and finance by owning shared definitions, data models, process boundaries and change control.

RevOps is frequently described as the merger of three ops teams. That describes a reporting structure, not a function. The functional definition is governance: RevOps owns the substrate that every revenue-facing team depends on, and it is accountable for that substrate remaining consistent as each team changes independently.

Governance does not mean taking ownership away from functions. Marketing still owns demand, sales still owns pipeline, finance still owns the ledger. RevOps owns the definitions those teams share, the boundaries between them, and the process by which changes to either are proposed, reviewed and released.

Where it breaks

RevOps is staffed as a request queue, so it optimizes ticket throughput while the definitional layer decays.
