Win rate
Win rate is the proportion of a defined cohort of opportunities that reached closed-won, measured from a fixed entry stage.
Win rate requires a stated entry point and a cohort basis. Rate from creation, rate from qualification, and rate from proposal are three different numbers describing three different things, and quoting one without the entry stage is uninterpretable. Cohort basis matters equally: opportunities created in a period, followed to resolution, rather than opportunities closed in a period.
The denominator also has to account for opportunities that neither won nor lost but rotted. Excluding stalled deals from the denominator inflates the rate; the honest treatment is an explicit no-decision outcome with its own rate.
Where it breaks
Win rate is computed on closed deals in a period, so a quarter where sellers scrub losses shows an improvement.

Field notes on this
- When pipeline stages describe sellers, not buyers
Seller-activity stages can weaken conversion and forecast analysis. Define buyer evidence, then calibrate it against realized outcomes.
